The circle should eventually be broadened by inviting faculty from different departments to come together with administrators and discuss aspirations and goals for the coming decade. The resources needed to effect these changes must be clearly defined and a realistic path must be charted to complete the planning stage.

University administrators will need to actively support faculty development and remove barriers to interdisciplinary teaching, a key aspect of enhancing undergraduate education. Departments and colleges must find new ways to help individual faculty and academic departments innovate and reward their efforts in creating, assessing, and sustaining new educational programs. For example, faculty interested in adapting teaching approaches for their own use or in creating new teaching materials should have lighter than normal requirements for teaching, research, or service while actively engaged in such projects. Also, travel funds earmarked especially for faculty development or education meetings should be provided to enable faculty to participate in meetings that enhance their teaching capabilities.

These funds must be targeted toward faculty who are specifically seeking to build and sustain high quality programs that can be assessed and demonstrated as effective. Many professional societies already play important roles in furthering innovation and promoting higher educational standards. Materials required:
1. A large plastic or glass magnifying lens.
2. Clips.

Procedure:
1. Fix the magnifying lens on a tabletop with clips or ask a friend to hold it steady.
2. Ask another friend to stand on the other side of the mirror so that both of you are a few feet away from the mirror. Look at each other through the mirror.
3. Ask your friend to take steps towards the lens as you take equal number of steps backwards, keeping the distance between you two constant. Then move towards the lens while your friend backs away. See how your friend’s face appears and ask your friend how your face appears.
4. Next find an illuminated object like a light bulb. Turn off the other lights in the room. Hold the magnifying lens several feet away from the light bulb and fix it there.
5. Hold a piece of paper on the other side of the lens and move away till an image of the bulb is seen on the paper.

Scientific explanation:
Magnifying lenses bend light falling on it towards the axis of the lens so that it converges on the other side. Finally the rays of light meet at one point. This is called focal point of the lens. At this point, if you keep a piece of paper, a magnified upside down image of the object on the other side is seen.

However if the paper is kept before the focal point of the lens, no image will be focussed on the paper. But when you look at your friend through the lens, you can still see an image of your friend right side up if he or she is standing before the focal point of the lens. Even though your eye is within the focal point on this side and the image does not return to one point on your eye, your brain shows it as if there is an image on the same side of the lens as the object right side up.

Aim:
The aim if this science fair experiment is to explain the principle of an electric motor with the help of an experiment.

Materials Required:
1. 4 to 6 magnetic discs
2. 2 Batteries of 1.5 volts each
3. 2 feet long flexible wire (insulated).
4. Tape for insulation.
5. A block of wood (dimension 2 inches*4 inches*6 inches)
6. An emery paper and a knife.

Procedure:
1. Make a small cylindrical pile from the magnetic discs.
2. Now place this cylindrical pile of magnets on the smooth wooden surface such that they can roll.
3. Now divide the big cylindrical pile of magnets into two different piles with a gap of ½ inch. This is such that the north pole of one pile faces the south pole of the other.
4. Now use the insulation tape to carefully tape the magnetic piles on the wooden board.
5. Then tape the battery on the same wooden board such that the curved surface of the cylinder faces the battery.
6. Remove the insulation from both the ends of the insulated wire with the help of the knife or the emery paper.
7. Now loop the wire through the space in between the two cylinders such that the ends of the wire touch the terminals of the battery.
8. Then make the ends of the wire touch the battery terminals. The wire loop will jump up or down.
9. If we reverse the current’s direction of flow the wire jumps exactly in the opposite direction.

Scientific Explanation:

This is an experiment to shows how we convert electrical energy to mechanical energy as in case of motors. This energy conversion helps in motor to revolve. Here the contacts are fixed both with the help of commutators (a sort of sliding contact which allow the conduction of electricity but not fixed to a point. It lets the other body to move without breaking the electrical connection) we can create a sliding contact. This is because the magnetic field exerts a force on the electric field perpendicular to magnetic field and so we get a circular motion. If we reverse the poles of the magnet we will get an opposite motion of the wire as the magnetic fields are reversed.

Note: The first motor based on the above principle was made by Michael Faraday in 1821 and further improved by Joseph Henry in 1831.
