Make each education cover letter unique to the specific position to which you are applying. “I am applying for a teaching position at your school” is dull and generic. “I am applying for the History Teachers position at Betty Boop Elementary School” is much more specific, and is much more likely to capture the hiring managers attention.
You will need to limit your cover letter to one page, so you will not be able to mention every qualification you have. Focus on a few qualifications and accomplishments that are the most important. Make sure you relate those to the specific position, and how it makes you a better candidate. In business this is referred to as Competitive Advantage. Why should they choose you over the other people that have applied for the same position? This means you have to do more than give a list of skills. Your resume already does that. You have to tell them why you’re the best person for the job.
Do not finish your letter without asking for an interview. Successful sales people will tell you that there is power in asking. It encourages the reader to take action. After you have asked for the interview, give your contact information. Do not make the reader have to track your phone number down in your resume, give it to them. You want to make contacting you as easy as possible. Finish off your cover letter by letting them know when you will be following up. Give a specific date when you will follow up, then remember to call on that date.
Always remember to check your grammar and spelling before you send your cover letter anywhere. With the abilities to check this with most word processing software, there’s really no excuse for letting mistakes slip through, especially for someone trying to get a job in education. Run the checkers, then re-read your cover letter aloud to find any mistakes the software might have missed. If there are any mistakes or areas that are unclear, this is your chance to make corrections.
There is a lot of competition for jobs in education. In order to get one of these jobs, you have to get noticed. Your chance to make a good first impression is your cover letter. If it doesn’t get noticed, neither will you. Show the people doing the hiring that you are a unique person with the skills and abilities to engage and educate children. Show them you’re alive.
The definition of disability varies from policy to policy, but the traditional definition specifies that total disability is the “inability to work at any gainful occupation” (referred to as “Any Occ”). Under this definition, if the insured can do any job – for even a portion of his former income – the insured is not considered totally disabled. Some older policies require that the insured must also be confined to the house and under the treatment of a doctor. This tightly constructed definition may not be allowed in several states. A more liberal and current definition defines total disability is the “inability to perform the duties of any occupation for which he is reasonably suited by education, training, or experience.” Another definition is “inability to perform all of the substantial and material duties of his regular occupation.” (Referred to generally as “His Occ”)
A typical disability definition states that for a specified time after the beginning of the disability, the insured is totally disabled if he is completely unable to engage in his occupation (His Occ). After the specific time period, commonly one, two or five years, the insured is considered totally disabled only if he is unable to perform the duties of any occupation for which he is reasonably suited by education, training or experience (“Any Occ”).
Partial Disability
Contracts may provide partial disability benefits, particularly in the case of disability caused by accident. Partial disability is often defined as the “inability of the insured to perform one or more of the important duties of his occupation.” Some policies provide that benefits are only payable for a partial disability immediately following a period of total disability for which benefits were payable. The partial disability benefit usually pays a percentage (usually 50%) of the weekly or monthly indemnity payable for total disability for a limited period (usually three to six months).
Policies may provide benefits for residual disabilities. A residual disability benefit provides benefits for loss of earnings after a return to work from total disability, if the insured cannot earn as much as he did prior to the disability. The residual benefit is expressed as a percentage of the amount payable for total disability.
Amount of Benefits
The amount of the weekly or monthly payment applied for is usually based on the insured’s earnings and is usually limited to a percentage of the insured’s earned income. The benefits may be capped (such as: 75% of stated annual income, with a maximum monthly benefit of $5,000).
Special care should always be taken in computing the benefit amount. There can be wide variances in qualifications, and all sources of income must be stated. It should be emphasized that overstating income so that the benefit maximum can be increased, can, at the very least, create an anti-selection element; and can even be grounds for denying benefits at time of disability. Reporting of income vary by company and policy, and the reporting requirements must be stringently followed.

Know your mission. Companies have mission statements and it is important to know the mission statement for your family. My husband and I decided many years ago that there were certain values that we felt were important to instill in our children. It was important that they grew up happy and secure. We wanted them to know they were loved. We wanted them to value people, and to know the value of hard work. We jokingly referred to our desire for them to be polite and well-mannered, as making them good little citizens. This was our way of saying that they would be contributing members to society. So our mission statement was: We will make sure they are good people.
Make sure all the members of your family (the work force) know they are appreciated and important. This is important in all organizations. Members need to know that they are contributing and their contribution is valued. You should acknowledge them as important to the family’s success and happiness.
Have good support systems in place. In any business, it is necessary to have consultants, suppliers and assistants, and know when and where to go for outside advice and help. In a family, your support system consists of physicians, teachers, coaches, and all the other people you and your family interact with on a regular basis. Make sure they are doing the job they should, i.e., that they add value to the organization.
Organization is key. A well-run family life is like a well-run business. You must have good organizational systems in place. You need to know where people need to be, at what time, and how they will accomplish their goals.
An atmosphere of trust and safety is necessary in any organization that wants to achieve positive results. Your children and the parent or parents need to know that there is honesty and integrity throughout the family.
Any organization requires rules, and consequences for failure to follow the rules should be consistent and fair. Guidelines and expectations need to be clear, and good/successful behavior should be expected and rewarded. Respect for all members of the organization is important and non-negotiable. If there are problems, a good parent/manager needs to intervene and help those involved, work it out in a calm and logical manner.
Education should be valued. Any organization should encourage growth and learning, and will accordingly benefit from all members understanding the value of education. The members will likewise benefit from learning to help themselves and others.
The family, like any organization, needs to meet often to discuss concerns and challenges. This can often be done over dinner, which incidentally is an excellent time to bond and learn what each member (division) is working on. Sharing what the divisions are working on helps the members to get to know each other and can lead to communication that can be supportive and helpful.
Good health is another key and the prescription is no secret: good nutrition, exercise, proper amounts of sleep, and not too much junk food. Just as sloppy habits lead to underperformance, strong health habits lead to strong performance.
Perhaps most importantly, a family must have time to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Just as companies plan outings or parties, a family needs to plan time together as a unit. Vacations or outings can help members find ways of bonding, sharing and building a common legacy.
